Summary

──The Body's Wounds, Guasha Knows──
The first comprehensive book on guasha, scientifically analyzed!
From heatstroke, colds, insomnia to stiff necks,
discover self-healing techniques for relaxing muscles and relieving stress.

Huang Huijun, a third-generation guasha practitioner and founder of MGA Muscle Guasha Academy,
explores the mysteries of guasha from both Chinese and Western medical perspectives.

Many people think that gua sha is only for heatstroke, but in fact, whenever you feel uncomfortable, gua sha can help relieve it.
As a third-generation descendant of a family tradition of gua sha, author Huang Huijun has been gua sha'd since childhood.
Whether feeling unwell, stressed, or even heartbroken, gua sha has been used to improve these conditions.

However, many people often do not understand the principles of gua sha or how to do it properly.
Huang Huijun decided to combine her own knowledge with expertise in anatomy and physical therapy.
She verified a large amount of gua sha literature and integrated ancestral gua sha experience to pass on gua sha culture in the most scientific and straightforward manner.

This is a scientific gua sha book suitable for everyone, and in it, you will learn:

▍What is "gua sha"?
Do you think that simply vigorously scraping the skin until it turns red is gua sha?
In fact, within the MGA system, true gua sha involves using proper tools (gua sha plate) and medium (gua sha oil) to gently scrape the body,
gradually causing "sha" to appear.

▍ Discovering bodily pain through scraped "sha"!
When gua sha is performed correctly, the resulting sha exhibits a certain discernibility, also known as a "sha chart".
Through this chart, we can identify different types of sha and assess the severity of pain, even deducing aspects of the person's lifestyle. This enables us to understand how to better care for the body.

▍Illustrated with 34 targeted gua sha techniques to alleviate pain and enhance self-healing!
This book features common gua sha techniques accompanied by clear photos and step-by-step instructions, suitable for both practicing on others and self-treatment. For instance:

【Symptom1】Poor sleep – Gua sha on the neck and shoulders
【Symptom2】Constipation – Gua sha on both sides of the waist
【Symptom3】Nasal congestion – Gua sha on the sinuses
【Symptom4】Heatstroke – Gua sha on the chest and back

Through Teacher Huìjūn's explanations, you will gain a complete understanding of the principles and techniques of gua sha, effectively alleviating discomfort in your body!

▍Sneak Peek into Exciting Content ▍
1.Learn to choose the right tools to scrape sha with "discernibility".
2.Teach you to identify the sha charts scraped out and analyze the person's symptoms.
3.Understand the techniques and grip of gua sha plates for effective relaxation through scraping.
4.Understand the anatomical positions for precise gua sha application.
5.Can gua sha improve luck? Is gua sha suitable for pets? Get answers to the most intriguing questions all at once.

Foreword

Foreword
When you feel uncomfortable but can't pinpoint the reason,
Gua Sha has been a tradition in our family since childhood. From kindergarten where I dislocated my elbow (being hypermobile, a slight movement could pop it out, and my grandfather would skillfully put it back), to falling off my bicycle in elementary school, coping with increased academic pressure in junior high leading to mild myopia, and the stress of high school entrance exams triggering acne outbreaks...

Why Gua Sha?

From childhood to adulthood, I grew up surrounded by Gua Sha. Whether it was a cold, nasal congestion, sore throat, menstruation, or even preparation and physical conditioning around exams or dealing with heartbreak, Gua Sha was always there.

In medical terms, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners generally view Gua Sha as a method to "disperse Qi". In TCM theory, "Qi" is the vital force that maintains bodily functions, and deficiencies can lead to metabolic disruptions or stagnation. Therefore, excessive Gua Sha should be avoided to prevent excessive dispersion that might weaken the body. On the other hand, Western medical perspectives often perceive Gua Sha as causing "micro-vascular rupture", which can be alarming to witness. Hence, skepticism towards Gua Sha persists.

Gua Sha enhances blood circulation and accelerates bodily repair.

One might wonder, why exactly engage in Gua Sha? What benefits does it bring? Simply put, "blood circulation" forms the foundation of bodily repair, and Gua Sha's benefits hinge on guiding blood flow.

During emergencies necessitating relief through Gua Sha, like acute ankle sprains, I ponder how to utilize surrounding muscles such as the anterior tibial and peroneus muscles or nearby blood vessels to drain the swollen tissues. This reduces discomfort from inflammatory reactions and accelerates tissue recovery by swiftly clearing the injured area. It's akin to carving a path through Gua Sha to guide the blood out of the wound, hastening its recovery.

Conversely, in chronic cases of ankle sprains, symptoms might include slight swelling, discomfort with certain movements, or increased soreness during weather changes. Here, I contemplate using Gua Sha to redirect blood flow to the injured tissues, restarting the circulation of nutrients and fluids to expedite repair—a process akin to "switching on the body's self-repair mechanism".

Therefore, Gua Sha involves scraping the skin to increase blood flow, facilitating local repair and promoting overall health. Yet, the body's inherent repair capabilities should ideally be sufficient. However, due to modern lifestyles characterized by high stress and prolonged sitting, many people experience diminished repair abilities.

Since the repair capacity of the body is closely related to sufficient blood flow, excessive local blood circulation due to insufficient overall blood flow can lead to what Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) refers to as "excessive draining of Qi, resulting in bodily weakness." Therefore, it's crucial for practitioners of gua sha to carefully strategize their approach, especially as discussed in Chapter Four's "Eight Dimensions of Thought."

Given the variations in individual constitutions, experienced gua sha practitioners must assess the blood flow condition of the recipient as accurately as possible. Typically, we gauge this by observing whether the skin turns "red" during gua sha. While in both optimal and suboptimal health conditions, gua sha might not produce sha (the characteristic redness or petechiae), the presence or absence of skin erythema directly correlates with sufficient blood circulation.

With the understanding that blood circulation is a cornerstone of bodily repair, gua sha has become one of the most effective methods among all health practices for promoting blood flow. I believe this is one of the main reasons for its enduring popularity.

Three Key Concepts to Know Before Gua Sha

After understanding the three major categories of gua sha, the following are three essential concepts related to gua sha that should be explained. Understanding these theories from the outset allows both the practitioner and the recipient to better comprehend the significance of gua sha.

(1)Different Sha Types in Different Areas Signify Different Issues

Using specialized MGA gua sha tools and oils, along with various gua sha techniques, results in different types of sha appearing. Each area of the body has unique anatomical structures, functions, and nerve reflex zones. Therefore, these sha marks represent different health conditions. Simply put, through the appearance of sha (or "sha patterns"), one can understand each person's body story.

(2)Sha Emerges, Not Forced Out

Sha is not forcibly scraped out. When excessive force is applied, sha marks result from superficial skin abrasion and broken capillaries. Such marks lack the diagnostic value and distinction of authentic sha patterns. This misconception leads to widespread aversion to gua sha, often perceived as causing skin fibrosis (refer to page 48 for fibrosis explanation). However, with correct tools and techniques, sha naturally emerges without causing pain.

(3)Sha Reveals Body Injuries

Sha marks are manifestations of injuries. Microscopic tissue analysis of sha reveals red blood cells, which vary in oxygenation. Older injuries show darker and deeper sha marks due to lower oxygen levels, while fresh injuries display brighter red marks with higher oxygen content. Sha patterns can indicate the timing of injuries, helping understand lifestyle habits that contribute to injury accumulation (like excessive phone use or poor computer ergonomics).

These concepts highlight the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of gua sha, emphasizing its role in understanding and addressing bodily health through sha patterns.
