What is Carbon Fiber?
Carbon fiber is a new material with excellent mechanical properties. Its density is less than one-fourth that of steel, and the tensile strength of carbon fiber resin composite materials is generally above 3500 MPa, which is 7 to 9 times stronger than steel. The tensile elastic modulus ranges from 230 to 430 GPa, which is also higher than that of steel. Carbon fiber is a fiber material that combines chemical inertness and semiconductor properties. It has outstanding features such as being lightweight, high strength, high elastic modulus, high temperature resistance, acid resistance, minimal creep under long-term stress, fatigue resistance, strong dimensional stability, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, low friction coefficient, and lubricity.
In addition to its strength and lightweight characteristics, carbon fiber has other advantages: its specific heat and conductivity are between those of non-metals and metals. It has a small thermal expansion coefficient and excellent corrosion resistance.Carbon fiber heating elements are highly energy-efficient, saving more than 30% compared to general metal heating elements. They heat up very quickly and are considered pure black body materials, which means they can achieve rapid heating, low thermal lag, uniform heat distribution, long-distance thermal radiation transfer, and fast thermal conversion. During operation, the light flux is significantly lower than that of metal heating pipes, and the thermal conversion efficiency can reach over 95% (in other words, if you use a 1000W conventional heating pipe, you only need 700W when using a carbon fiber heating pipe).
However, carbon fiber does have some disadvantages. It cannot resist impacts from sharp objects, can easily oxidize under strong acid conditions, and may undergo metal carbonization when combined with metals. Therefore, surface treatment of carbon fiber is necessary before use. To enhance the practicality and durability of carbon fiber materials, materials engineering has specifically developed CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) technology.
